Turning operational is the best thing to happen to my NS life so far. (Though, my bunkmates are commenting that I’ve already turned ops at least 3 months ago in terms of my bed-cupboard area [read: messy].) Now that we are done training, it’s time to do do real stuff. As in, really real stuff. Like protecting an entire off-shore island. And I’m not referring to the one that’s infested with Number Fours. Plus, all the privileges like bringing in food, magazines, mp3 players and my non-existent PSP (xmas is coming – hint hint).

One down side, however, is being confined over weekends for 2NTM. And the fact that the 2 weekends that are taken up this year are the ones that I really really want to spend out of camp.

(And I’m totally not looking forward to Ex. Falcon and ATEC.)

and i think i’m addicted to jumping off planes now. with a parachute on, of course. the freefall feeling is no longer something i’m afraid of, rather, i look forward to it now. especially so during my 5th jump yesterday.

and, nothing beats the diagonal scenic view that you see during the drag caused by the deployment of the parachute. it’s really hard to describe it, and it’s hard to explain it. it’s a very unique experience that no one can ever take away from me.

Watch the first sortie fit up, enter the chinook. Chinook takes off, and flies circles in the air around the airbase. Streamers let out from chinook, floats straight downwards, to much cheers, considering the c-130 jump was cancelled due to ’strong winds’.

And the first pass of sortie 1 makes their exit.

*Fast forward*

I fit up my parachute and reserve. Noticed that my mains is serial number 108 [block number of old home], and my reserve is serial number 656 [block number of current home]. I must be feeling damn sian.

Routine fit-up checks by jumpmasters, and we sat down to wait for our turn to load up the chinook.

…which got delayed due to the chinook going back to refuel.

More time-wasting.

Finally, the walk down to the compass ring. Chinook hovers down and lands. Hear the mighty roar and feel the huge blasts of wind. As I walked towards the chinook, the turbo suddenly started up, generating lots of noise and heat, that we had to run all the way into the chinook to avoid them as much as possible.

“Fasten safety belt!” And we have lift-off.

Looked out the window to beautiful scenery.
The never-ending, fast-paced “patta-patta” sounds produced by the rotary wings is the best metaphor for my heartbeat.

Every time I visit my paternal grandmother at my uncle’s house, without fail, she would ask about how I’m doing at school, and then I’ll remind her that I’m in the army now, and she’ll comment, with genuine surprise, that I’m already in the army and tells me to be careful.

Problem is, in her memory, I’ll forever be the school-going grandson of hers who had just enlisted in the army. Though, I’m actually glad that I still exist in her memory.

It’s scary to imagine that one day, my parents, or even myself, just might suffer the same fate as her.

I don’t know what your attitude towards your grandparents are, but I love my grandparents to bits.

Went on a Melancholy of Haruhi anime marathon last weekend, and I came across this little recollection by Haruhi, which I can’t help but find it similar to what I had thought about many times when I was younger:

Say. Have you ever realized how insignificant your existence is on this planet?

I have. It’s something that I’ll never forget.

During elementary school, when I was in sixth grade, the whole family went to watch a baseball game at the stadium. I wasn’t particularly interested in baseball, but I was shocked once we got there.

There were people everywhere I looked.

The ones on the other side of the stadium looked like squirming grains of rice all packed together. I wondered if every last person in Japan had gathered in this place.

And so, I asked my dad, exactly how many people were in the stadium? His answer was that a sold-out game meant around fifty-thousand people.

After the game, the path to the station was flooded with people. The sight stunned me. So many people around me, yet they only made a fraction of the people in Japan.

Once I got home, I got a calculator and did the math. We learned that the Japanese population was a hundred million and some in social studies. Divide fifty thousand into that, and you only get two-thousandth.

I was stunned again.

Not only was I just one little person in that sea of people in that stadium, but that sea of people was merely a drop in the ocean.

I had thought myself to be a special person up until that point.

I enjoyed being with my family, and most of all, I thought that my class in my school had the most interesting people in the world.

But, that was when I realized it wasn’t like that. The things that happened in what I believed to be the most enjoyable class in the world could be found happening in any school in Japan. Everyone in Japan would find them to be ordinary occurances.

Once I realized this, I suddenly found that my surroundings were beginning to lose their colour.

Brush my teeth and go to sleep at night.
Wake up and eat breakfast in the morning.

People do those everywhere.

When I realized that everyone did all these things on a daily basis, everything started to feel so boring. And if there were so many people in the world, there had to be someone living an interesting life that wasn’t ordinary.

I was sure of it.

Why wasn’t that person me?

That’s all I could think about until I graduated from elementary school. And in the process, I realized something: Nothing fun will happen if you sit around waiting. So I figured I would change myself in middle school. Let the world know that I wasn’t a girl content with sitting around and waiting. And I conducted myself accordingly.

But in the end, nothing ever happened.

Before I knew it, I was in high school. I thought something would have changed.

By a moment of chance, I found myself attending a Toastmasters’ meeting at my neighbourhood CC.

It all started on Thursday when I saved the Documents_Checklist.pdf file onto my brother’s memory card so I could go down to the photocopy shop to print it. Then I did not put it back into the camera.

And as I was coming home on Friday, my brother was all, “Damn you.”, because he needed to use the camera.

So I went down to the CC to pass him the memory card, and found him in the conference room. Turns out that the toastmasters’ club meeting was about to start in 15mins. So what happened was that, my brother had to leave halfway to ‘go on a hot date’, so I took over his role as the AH counter, even though I’ve no idea what was going on.

It was actually quite a pleasant experience. The Zhenghua Toastmasters’ Club is a fairly new club, at an age of barely over a year old, and the people there are friendly and accommodating, not only to the new and unconfident speakers, but also to the guests.

As the AH counter, I was supposed to note down on a piece of paper every single instance of any person in the room saying ‘Ah’, ‘Uh’, “Mm”, making any repeated words, or any other pause fillers. As the president of this club has mentioned, pause fillers are used by people to get their audience sense their existence, but are frowned upon by the club.

I have a habit, however, of making it a point to include pause fillers in my speaking. [I even use it in SMS ._.] So it was quite a challenge for me not to use them during the session.

I also attempted the table topics section of the meeting. I was supposed to give an impromptu 2min speech on the topic that I’ve randomly picked from a bunch of topics [think Scenes from a Hat]. I’ve always liked impromptu speeches, so I was more than eager to try it out. I think I failed miserably, but at least the people there were, at the very least, entertained.

All in all, I thought it was a fun experience joining that toastmasters’ club meeting. Would love to officially join the club, but unfortunately, they only meet once a month, on weekdays. So maybe I shall join the club next time.

Surviving the A Levels; Getting at least one A for the A Levels; composing for a string quartet.

Failing to get a single A or B for common tests/prelims.
Failing to get recognized for my efforts in my CCAs.

Getting a very high fever in the middle of the last round of the CJC inter-JC bridge tourney, causing my team to lose the consolation prize at the very last moment. And other minor stuff here and there, like falling ill after getting caught in the rain after cycling at East Coast Park.

Got a job at Focus Network Agencies, which is basically The Cocoa Trees in disguise.

First job was to pack and wrap hampers in the conference room at the office, at No. 87 Defu Lane 10.
Then it was working at the warehouse which is located right next to the office. It was all unpacking, pasting “Imported by Focus Network Agencies” labels on the chocolates, and repacking.
There was also deliveries. Delivered stuff to Police HQ and a random church in Toa Payoh. At the same time, I found myself on the front passenger seat of my boss’ car back to the office. The Boss sort of asked me about my life, universe and everything. Nice conversation, it was.
Last, and currently, I found myself selling stuff at a temporary shop set up for 3 months at Bukit Panjang Plaza. Today was the Opening Day. And apparently, since it’s only temporary, The Company decided not to invest in any renovations. So the shop is fugly. Walls are just plain white, the floor is untiled and dusty, and the display racks look old. Even the cash register produces receipts that don’t look professional enough, like those used by mamak shops. And when a rare power outage struck our shop and the shop beside us, all the sales records for the day stored in the register were entirely erased. sian.

Remember our English i-Learning homework back in sec 1/2? The one where we had to watch humorous videos and comment about the humour? One of them was from Friends, about Chandler smoking and his friends (har har) telling him to stop smoking, and Chandler telling them that everyone has flaws.

I had embarked on a Friends Season 1 marathon, and I found the episode which had that scene in it, and I finally found out what Rachel meant when she said of Chandler’s smoking: “It’s worse than the thumb!” That was the one line in the video extract we were given that I could not understand only because we are not given the context.

Prom attire from G2000. Lucky to have found something of my size 2 days before prom.
Shopping + Pool with Meiyi and Shuyi day before prom. Was pestered into getting myself a bowtie.

ACTUAL-
Lots of photo taking. Calvin gave away his lucky draw prize. Zei won the grand prize wth. People say the food wasn’t really nice but I beg to differ. Fish maw soup was especially delicious heh heh. The Boyahs’ new lyrics for their trademark song was, well, entertaining. (“big… dustbins.”) Dances were excellent, but prom king and queen nominees’ performances were a joke. (I was fooled for a moment, though, by the Aladdin lip-sync.) Pity Yong Fountain of Happiness didn’t win haha. Photography booth was epic fail, apparently they didn’t even manage to sell a single photo print. I feel sorry for them. Partly because I remember selling photo prints as a Sec 3 during 2005’s Sec 4 Grad Dinner, and the prints sold like Hello Kitties at McDonalds, without the scuffling. Imagine, 15 people in a single photo, all of them want a copy = 15 prints * selling price = $$.  Okay la, maybe it’s because now compacts are so cheap and everyone has their own camera, and printing photos isn’t cool anymore because all people want to do with the photos is to see it on facebook, which, by the way, is a rather depressing trend for me to notice in people nowadays.

POST-
Over to Abtzy’s with Meiyi JinJun Paul Yezi Calvin Raphael. Wii Music was fun fun fun. First time conducting since trying out for student conductor in sec 3. And Meiyi’s just giving excuses when she said that the Wiimote was unable to read her hand movements during the handbell game – she just lags. hahahaha. Plus JJ playing WTFmode on WC3 and Abtzy demonstrating his 1337 flying skillz on his airplane simulator by crashing into this famous HK tower which probably isn’t really famous because I forgot its name [we made a screenshot of the plane half-submerged into the tower].
Cycling at East Coast Park + enjoying the scenery at the jetty + being stuck in the pavilion due to the rain. So we ended up playing impromptu stuff from Whose Line is it Anyway! Hilarity ensued. Lunch at Burger King before getting caught in the rain again as we were heading back, this time having no shelter nearby and ended up being more drenched than a fish in water.
Which was probably the reason why I had been sick for the past 3 days. \=

Really enjoyed Class BBQ yesterday. Cycling + Frisbee + BBQ + bluff neopets-rules + bluff samenumber-rules. Nick is really adept at the art of deception, with his epic decoy of the year during bluff, which is really hard to describe, you have to be there to believe how it pulled it off haha.
My classmates are really awesome people. =)

Ice-cream by Rui Heng’s mom was awesome. Jane and Shunta’s mini-recital, lunch at KFC, and talking to Shunta about (OMG The As Are Over!).

MEP chalet was fun. Mahjong, Wii Sports, and Kirby is still the only character I can play well with on SSBM. Yaa~ENG! XD It’s a pity the owner of the game did not unlock Falcon.

Photog BBQ was great. Playing Frisbee in the water, discussing about Uni Apps and NS, and sharing of memorable JC experiences that we had.

Mahjong at Weijia’s. Emo Avatar, surplus of chicken meat during dinner, and Raphael hu-ing just when I was on the verge of completing my ban se + peng peng + 4 flowers. (Won a grand total of 20cents after 4 winds.)

Physics MCQ wasn’t too bad, in my opinion. Considering that I’ve been getting an average of 25/40 for practice mcqs, I found that I had gotten at least 32 marks for this MCQ, which is excellent by my standards, even though I know that some are lamenting the fact that they got at least 3 questions wrong.

On to music. 8 days. I can hardly wait. Time to immerse myself in mridangams, imbals, the Les Six and whatnots.

Remember, LAN games do not just consist of DotA and Counterstrike! Try new things, New Day New Discoveries!

15. I’m not saying that playing games that you’re used to is not fun. Yes, I like that too, but don’t you think that since it has been a few years since CS and DotA were ‘invented’, wouldn’t there are many other fun games out there that have been created and developed that we have yet to try and thus missing out on? Since it’s Post-As, won’t it be even more fitting to try these new games? Yes, I understand that sticking to the tried and tested never fails, but neither is there anything to lose when trying out new stuff.

So what if you suck at these new games? Everyone has failed epicly during their first game of DotA or CS, and expressed some sort of unhappiness towards it, mild or otherwise. [You might still fail at it now unlike your A-Level Papers! ^_^, but definitely not as bad as your first time.] But after a few games, after learning to play these games, you become better at them, and you have learnt to love to play them.

Quake. I guarantee that you guys, especially CS junkies, will absolutely love this game within 5-10mins of playing it. I played it for the first time on 1st October during one random LANning session with some friends and got the hang of it after a few rounds. I got the lowest score during the entire session, but so what? Even though I have not learnt how to be good in the game, the important thing is that I had learnt to play a new and fun game that I can play at LAN sessions other than CS and DotA, that is, if others are willing to try playing these games too. Variety, people.

So I urge you guys, step out of your zone of familiarity, try new stuff. I assure you guys that you would have lots of fun doing so. CS and DotA aren’t the only games that allow you to kill everyone else and do stupid things and laugh at the attempts of doing stupid things.

But of course, if you guys remain unconvinced, I’m definitely alright with playing CS and DotA.

18. [from nigel] In the first place, this outing was organized by nick and royce jointly with every intention of playing CS. There is absolutely nothing wrong in suggesting alternative activities for others to do, even during the outing that they have organized, but that should only come after the original activity has been fulfilled and everyone is getting bored. How would you like it if you organized an activity to go play beach volleyball in Sentosa, with everyone agreeing and expressing excitement at that particular activity, and then someone who has agreed to come along starts saying, “Hey, why not we go swimming instead, or let’s go to Sentosa and not go to the beach at all but go to the MERLION!!!!one!!11!!”. Don’t you think it is very disrespectful, especially after the organizers have explained their reasons for sticking to the main activity?

Yes, indeed, CS and dota have been out for very long and tried-and-tested. But it’s with a definite certainty that I say that they are the more enjoyable games. Indeed, Quake is fun. It offers more fast-paced action and is more chaotic than CS. Having played lan often with my friends, inevitably, we did get bored and try out games like Quake. But that was with guys only. The platform that Quake runs on and the graphics as well as the gameplay have a high propensity to cause one to feel dizzy and unwell after playing two or three games, and if you start Quake right at the beginning, most of the people will probably be not in the mood to play anymore after that.

Besides, the girls (and even some of the guys) have just gotten to get the hang of CS, especially girls like mel and liyana who find CS fun. Sure, if everyone has never played Quake before, everyone would be on a ‘level playing field’, all being new, and would thus just really have fun learning the game and killing each other. But haven’t you played Quake before? Oh so I guess you would be there teaching people and killing them too as they pick up the game, as compared to CS where you are not as good as others and the girls actually enjoy playing it enough to participate actively.

Besides, the point of nick’s posting on the yahoo groups about the activity was to ask for interested parties who like CS to go, and he even stressed that there would probably be only about one game of dota. So, those people who aren’t interested in the activities of the day, should just not go, because everyone else has agreed to them. I don’t like CS. I much prefer dota. Hence I didn’t want to go. But the world doesn’t solely revolve around me, and “Variety, people.” doesn’t really apply when everyone else enjoys something that you don’t really enjoy, because people like their comfort zones. Hmmm, why could this be? I know! It’s because they feel comfortable in them! OHMYGOD WHAT A REVELATION. Even though Obama has won with the message of ‘Change’, it doesn’t really apply in most of the situations today. If it were just a mild suggestion to take up alternative games, no one would mind. But when it appears to be enforced and repeatedly re-iterated even after others have disagreed, then that begins to become the forcing of one’s opinions on others. And besides, rather than be in a situation where you’d have to incessantly persuade everyone else to comply to you, isn’t it much simpler to just not go? Nobody likes to feel extra.

Oh, your GP fails? I didn’t know “people skills” was a subject in RJC that could be taken under the guise of “H1 GP”.

19. I’m terribly sorry if my intentions in my earlier message was not clear. Just to clarify:
1. I’ve absolutely no problems at all with the main activity planned by the organizers. In fact, I’m all for CS (and DotA) during the upcoming LAN session. What I had done was merely giving reasons for my suggestion, which is to try new games, for the organizers to consider after we are done with the said games, and suggesting one new game to play so we don’t have to waste LAN time choosing the next game.
2. And, even if you guys decide to play CS only for this session, I was hoping that my suggestion would be considered for any possible LAN sessions after this one.
3. Quake was just an example, and I’m fine with what Nigel thinks about it, that it is dizzying and stuff, but he is also implying that I’m just being selfish because I have a half-an-hour time-played advantage over everyone else who has not played it before, and I find this accusation unreasonable. I’m just saying that I enjoyed the game, thus I’m recommending it.
4. There are many more unfounded accusations that Nigel had made against me in his message, but I’m not wasting any more precious mugging time to point them all out, plus, I’m not the type of person who enjoys making personal attacks against others, even if others are doing so against me. at home? The week before Stoke, we beat Man U,
the game before Portsmouth, we beat Chelsea away,
and then we go and draw against them ***** teams.”

Oh why do such idiots exist?
1. There’s no mention at all that says that it’s bad to be a commando. I’m just unsure if I wanted to endure more “Commando Chong!” exclaims by fellow schoolmates after I told people about my commando vocation assessment back in July.
2. But honestly, who have I offended to be called a loser? The only person qualified to call me a loser is myself.

No point hiding the fact that I’ve got a direct enlistment to the commando vocation now. So far, I’ve only told Mark Yeow, and my family, including my brother, who was in camp when i sms-ed him the news. For everyone else, I just said that I’ve gotten my enlistment letter already, which said that I will be enlisting on the 9th of January next year.

Apparently John Cheo “found out that commandos enlist on the 9th of January”, and told this to Mervyn Tan, who promptly announced to the whole world that he had inferred that I’ve “gotten the commando letter”. So lately, I’ve been asked by many people, mostly the arts and humans people, if it is true.

So, rather than to continue being pestered about my enlistment status, I shall say this:
Yes, I’ve been directly enlisted to the Commando Training Institute at Pasir Ris Camp, and will be enlisting on 9 Jan 2009.

And, for my sanity’s sake, please, stop asking.

The first thing my brother told me, when he returned home at 10.45pm last Friday, is to change up and go for a late-night run around the neighbourhood. Everything went well for the first 10mins, then I started dying and finally decided to stop at the 15-min mark, even though we planned to run for half an hour. oh no this is bad i’m unfit. But considering that I haven’t been exercising at all for the past 1.5 months, it’s a good start.

In terms of sports, this weekend has been a fantastic one. First is Liverpool’s 5th match this season where they come from behind to win the match. 2-1 down, Liverpool scored twice in the last 10mins to remain at level terms with Chelsea on the Premiership table.

Second is Hamilton’s victory in China. Absolutely no mistakes at all for this driver throughout the race. I’m hoping that he finally wins the title this year after a disappointing end-season performance in last year GP season.

Third, a fantastic display of skill and determination by the Boston Red Sox saw them force a Game 7 in the ALCS against the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite being 3-1 down, they made a comeback from a 7-run deficit to win Game 5 and won 4-2 in Game 6. The commentators also mentioned that Boston had gone 10 games without a single fielding error. Game 7 tomorrow at 8am will decide who faces the Phillies at the World Series.

As I mentioned on my blog a year ago, I got a pair of $10 Starbucks vouchers which are valid for a year until 18 Oct 2008, for my “best progress in class for Econs” from my Econs tutor.

Somehow, I managed to postpone my usage of the vouchers (I keep convincing myself that I don’t deserve these vouchers based on the fact that my econs grades have not improved much since then). I asked people out for a mugging session at Starbucks but no one seemed interested. I even offered a few people (whom I know are coffee-lovers) the vouchers but for one reason or another, they rejected the offer.

So in the end, I gave them to my dad and my brother. After all, what better way is there to share freebies than with the family.

Got my enlistment notice last tuesday. I’m enlisting on the 9th of January. So damn early. I’d wanted to either do some relief teaching for the money and experience, or perhaps take up this teaching internship programme and hope that my enlistment date would be in march, like my brother. I find it immensely irritating when I take time off mugging to spend hours on household chores only to be reprimanded for things like not spotting a single strand of hair lying in an obscure corner of the house, or clipping the clothes on the bamboo pole in a pattern that my mom does not approve of etc etc. Stupid until cannot be more stupid, 你真的是笨到不可以再笨了, they say.

Watched Wall-E last Tuesday with the J2 Photog people. We missed the first 5mins, which was a shame because I read somewhere that Wall-E was the X in “PIXAR” during the intro of the makers of the movie. Would be nice to know how the introduction was like.

Anyway, if you have watched the movie already, you would already know that it is full of references to many many things, including other PIXAR movies, Apple and even real-life events.

YES OR NO

We’re always making choices. How we will use our time, how we’re going to get to our destination, what we’re going to have for lunch, what colours should be used for our logo, what proposal should be dumped and which one should be taken up. Every step that we take presents us with an option of “Yes” or “No”.

All these decisions, or in the case of some of us, in-decision, affects our happiness. How consciously do we make our choices? What happens when we can’t make a definite “Yes” or “No” is that we become stuck in the wilderness of “Maybe” land. When we spend too much time in this place, we allow others to decide how our lives should be led. Here we have no hope for fulfillment because when things go well, we can’t take the credit. And when things go awry, we blame ourselves for trusting the judgement of another.

Imagine that your partner or friend prefers to watch a particular movie and you’d really like to see another but you don’t say anything. You give your partner or friend a weak “maybe”, “it doesn’t matte” or a reluctant “oh ok…” Later, you feel resentful and angry because this always seems to happen and you “never get to see the movie that you want to see.”

Sometimes we justify this by believing that we don’t assert ourselves because we are easy-going or generous. If this is the case, then why do we subsequently feel lousy and on the losing end?

Now, asserting yourself doesn’t mean being demanding or unreasonable. By all means, empower yourself by expressing your feelings clearly, but be ready to negotiate or occasionally give in or come to a compromise. The important thing is simply to make your feelings known. Hiding behind a mask of indifference creates a lot of inner tension which may explode in the future.

It’s very important to empower yourself to make conscious choices to create the relationships and life that you want. A lot of people feel anger and resentment toward others but what they’re actually feeling is resentment towards themselves for not having the courage to go for what they really want.

Whenever you’re faced with a decision, take the time to go within yourself and ask yourself what you really want. Is it true that it doesn’t matter? Is it something you can take lightly? Or something you feel strongly about? When you evaluate your options consciously and express your feelings clearly, you’ll feel more empowered, and as a result, move confidently toward creating the kind of relationships and life that you want.

New e-payment system and next generation card for public transit

All EZ-Link cards, the stored-value cards used to pay for train and bus rides will be phased out starting next year.

That, after spending hundreds of millions of dollars, and being in use for only 6 years.

I remember reading this ST Forum letter, about this guy expressing his concern about the cost of implementing ez-link, whether spending so much money just to prevent people from underpaying their fares is worth it, and a LTA rep replied that the ez-link card would be used for a very long time so it’s okay.

6 years? Are you kidding me?

So now, LTA is spending another $100million on this new smart card thing. Seriously, there are many other transportation-related stuff [MORE FREQUENT BUSES! oh what the hell.] that the LTA should be working on instead of this.

I mean, if it is just a new multi-purpose card to complement the current cards (ez-link + NETS), it’s okay. But what I’m unhappy about is the “phasing-out” part.

Yet they’re still happily increasing the ERP rates and adding more gantries to add to the woes of both drivers and shops within the ERP zone. So that’s where the money went.

Though I have no negative views about the print edition, I wholly agree that the webmasters of ST Online are doing a very very bad job. It seems like the entire website is mostly broken, if not entirely.

I found out that in this year’s sports IHC, MT didn’t even bother putting up sign-up sheets. Apparently, the house comm just calls up people whom they think are good in the sport and ask them to sign up.

So what happens to those who are not as good? It seems that their response is akin to that of “That’s just too bad. I don’t really care that you’re in MT. You suck in volleyball and you have no right to play for us.”

A few days before Volleyball IHC, after noticing the absence of MT sign-ups sheets, I asked Jeffrey, who’s in Volleyball, about sign-ups for this IHC, and he said that his volleyball friend is forming a team, and that this team must be specially picked by him so as to ‘allow for maximum team bonding’. Um, wtf?

Just last year, when I wanted to join the sports IHCs, I was told to leave space for the J2s. This year, I’m told to leave space for better players.

Last year, there was a shortage of MT people participating in IHC. This year, their solution to this problem is to handpick their team in advance.

However, I think there’s one particular person whom I think is the most disgusting, the most biased person I’ve ever met, aside from my choir conductor. He thinks that he’s the greatest, that he’s good at every single sport, that since he has a lot of friends [as seen by his long list of birthday presents], and is so high up in the social ranks, therefore he has all the right to say “You suck at volleyball. You do not deserve to play.”. He is willing to sacrifice the use of a female school team volleyball player, in order to ensure that I do not play. Yet, as I spectate all his volleyball games, I dare say that I can play just as well, if not better, as him.

If not for the rest of the J2s in MT, I would have completely lost faith in the house I’ve been faithful towards for the past 6 years. I don’t care if they are faking it, but I shall believe that they are sincere, and I’m appreciative of the fact that I’ve been given the opportunity to play during Captain’s Ball IHC, even if it’s just for a few minutes of one match.

Somehow, I find the need to describe the entire napfa process to remind myself about the horrors of taking a napfa test. I’ve done this without fail for the past 4 years, since sec 2, when I got a blog, and this year shall be no exception.

Ok so, yesterday my pe teacher asked the fitness class if they wanted to do the test 1 day in advance from the ‘official’ test date the next day. At first, I wasn’t really sure if I was ready, as I was feeling rather sleepy and tired, and it was almost 10am, when the sun would be scorching hot [bad bad bad for 2.4]. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a try.

As most of the people in this batch of retakers felt that their pull-ups is their weakest station, that was our first station. Until then, I’d never reached the 5-pullup mark, which is what I needed to get a D, which is also one of the requirements for getting a Silver, which is what I need to shorten my life in NS. See the implications?

Anyway, I was the last to enter my name in the retest group, so I was to be the last to attempt each station. As I watched the rest do the pullups, most of them successfully, a few of them getting 2 or 3, I started worrying about whether I was just going to fail the first station there and then. But no, I got my 5 pullups. It was a historic moment in the life of Chong Woon Hian: getting 5 unassisted pull-ups. Achievement Unlocked! w00t w00t

Then there were shuttle run and situps which I completed without difficulty. 10.2s and 40 respectively.

It was the Standing Broad Jump station that gave me a rude awakening from my complacency that I could easily get my D [222+] anytime. For the past 4 months since the first napfa test in april, I’ve been training on pull-ups and running stamina and endurance, and paid no[t much] attention to my SBJ. And so it turns out that I got 219cm, 3cm away from the ‘D’ standard needed for a silver. And so, napfa 2008 v.2 came to a braking halt.

On hindsight, I’m thankful that I went for this test, or I would certainly would not have trained for it during the pe lesson then. Right after failing the SBJ station, the PE teacher in-charge of those training in their gym gave me some exercises to improve my SBJ techniques. That included jumping over the seat-height of the chair, the bench used for bench press, and the canoeing machine – individually and consecutively. The first 2 objects were rather intimidating when I was trying to jump over them, and I wasn’t convinced that I had overcome that fear at the end of the pe lesson. Still, I’ve learnt something during that lesson.

On to Tuesday. I warmed up by jogging on the trackmill, pulling at the lat-pull down station, and making some test-jumps on the mat. [I did not managed to get 222cm at that time. I thought it was a bad omen.]

And so, it was 4pm. The bunch of us napfa failures gathered at the track and registered our names on the teacher’s list. My batch was the ‘can get bronze but want to get silver to avoid extra-long NS’ batch. There were Jun Jie, Ali, Roger, Taufiq, Isaac, Joshua Ang and many others, about 20 in all. A quick poll indicated that the batch was weakest in SBJ, so SBJ it shall be to start the test.

This was the very test that I failed at the day before. I wasn’t even sure if I’d recovered from the day before.

The test began. SBJ was to take place at the sports hall. There were those who passed effortlessly, those who barely made it, and those who were told to take a rest and try again later. Fast forward a few minutes later, I found that I met my 222cm target.

SBJ: D – 222cm

Another teacher came to man the next station, sit and reach, so as to get things done more quickly. I kept reminding myself “37, 41, 45. 37, 41, 45″ which are the distances i need to cover for D, C and B respectively. I got 41cm on my first try, and decided not to waste any more energy.

Sit-and-reach: C – 41cm

We made out way back to the stadium for my most-feared station: pullups. Could I do it 2 days in a row, I kept thinking to myself. Roger was before me, and he managed to do 3 before deciding he couldn’t do anymore. Soon, it was my turn. At the 2nd pull-up, I started feeling really really tired. At the 4th, I was extremly exhausted. I mustered all my strength to get that 5th pull-up. Imagine the relief when I heard the teacher say the word “five!”. Achievement unlocked: getting D for both SBJ and pull-ups in a single test. w00t! The other retakers were really encouraging, congratulating me, and those who managed to pass their pull-ups with a D.

Pull-up: D – 5 pulls

Shuttle run? No problem.

4 x 10m Shuttle-run: A – 9.9s

The very last station before the 2.4km run was sit-ups. I don’t know if it’s all in my mind, but my leg and especially my stomach muscles started aching really badly. I must admit I didn’t do proper sit-ups, that is, I finished some of the sit-ups by landing only on half my back.

Sit-ups: C – 39 sit-ups

It was the very last obstacle to that coveted silver. I have done sub-12 for 2.4km a few times before, the first time being Napfa Apr 2005, but that was without the 5 stations before the run. My last few self-trainings on the track was proof that it was almost impossible for me to do so in this run, as I found myself still having a rather low stamina, as I felt really tired after 4 rounds each time.

Mr. Seah, the PE teacher who gave me 1-to-1 trainings for the past 4 months since the April NAPFA to work on my pull-ups, lent me his stopwatch to keep track of time, but I found it to be much of a lucky charm.

After resting for a while to recover slightly from the earlier 5 stations, and waiting a little while more for another group of retakers to finish their run, we were off. We started at the midway point of the 100m stretch nearest to the stadium steps. Mr. Seah was conducting the run for some J1 girls at the end point. He would cheer me on each round as I passed by.

“Remember to pace yourself. Don’t exhaust yourself too early.”
“Not bad. Keep it up.”
“3 rounds already. You can do it.”
“2 more rounds woonhian! Come on come on!”
“*was busy tending to a J1 girl*”

When I started, there was the intial tiredness in me, but eventually, momentum took on and I was breezing through for the first 3.5 rounds, making sure that I keep to my pace of 2mins per round. However, at the end of the 4th round, I found myself losing my pace, completing that round with a time of 8mins despite giving myself a 15-second lead in the first round.

5th round was spent thinking if that was my 11am lunch swirling around in my stomach. It was a really awful feeling. Many times, I felt like slowing down to a walk, but I managed to maintain my jogging pace.

In the middle of the 6th round, after being at the 2nd position since the start of the run, Jun Jie overtook me. I wasn’t too happy, but it was a blessing in disguise as I proceeded to pace myself behind him instead of slowing down, which I almost did. With 150m left, as I made the final bend around the track, My watch said 11.50mins. No more C, so be it. I increased my speed even though I kept feeling like vomiting there and then. I just couldn’t afford to assume that I would able to walk to the end within 50 seconds. [12.40mins is the time needed for a D.] So I increased my speed at that last stretch and finally completed the run. And so I found out that I was 3rd out of the [about] 12 people left in the test, and only 5 people passed the run. “Aiya see la waste my time at the first 5 stations.” – PE teacher who conducted the test.

2.4km run: D – 12:17min

Final tally: DDDCCA 17 points – Silver

To quote myself in my sms-es to fellow Minus Two-ers:

ok so i was working through my free composition and i realized that my entire free compo is plagarized, with sources like touhou and random original background music from youtube videos and flash games. there, i’ve said it.

then i was working on a brand new draft 1 and after an hour i found that i’m horribly stuck and devoid of any creativity whatsoever. i’m pretty much screwed. i have no idea how to convey the ideas that i brainstormed using music. i look through my practical pieces, and wonder how those composers even managed to figure that all those dissonances actually work in the piece. i look at entire orchestral scores and wonder how they managed to even put all the different parts together and make it sound… fantastic.

maybe i’m working on the free compo with the fact that it’s “only” 10% of the A-level music score in mind. or maybe i’m just afraid of negative comments on the compo, that no compo = no negative comments. but i know such trivial escaping from my problems does not solve anything.

oh why did i even take music in the first place? it should have come with a huge warning label.

I’m like, quite sad la. My dad delayed his decision to give me permission to invite people over to watch the euro 08 finals. By the time he made his decision, someone else beat me to it. And made sure there was no space left for me anyone else to join.

I dunno how to feel about this. Should I just count myself unlucky, or should I wonder why I wasn’t invited in the first place?

So in about half an hour I would be watching the match alone. Maybe my dad would join me; I do enjoy watching football matches with him, but it’s not quite the same, you see.

Perhaps, I’m not close enough to specific people, that I try to make more friends instead of making closer friends. I know many people, but it seems I have not made so much of an impact on anyone. So what if you know many people? So what if you have hundreds of people on your MSN contacts, or your facebook? If you haven’t made much of a (positive) impact on anyone, then you won’t be noticed. No one would think of inviting you over to any of their activities.

My pleas are being ignored.

Maybe all these insecurities were a result of something my P6 form teacher said to me at the end of the year, after PSLE: “The Australia trip is too full, and I’ve decided to take you out of the trip because you won’t have any friends there anyway.” I didn’t show it right then, but that was the ultimate blow after 3 years of being ostracized by most of the hpps gep people in my batch, not to mention the express people, who generally dislike the geppers.

I thought secondary school would allow me to make a fresh start, but my bad habits made sure I would be generally disliked for the next 4 years.

And now, JC. I made a bigger effort to let others have a good impression of myself. But still, it’s all in vain. I couldn’t correct my bad habits, and learnt a few new ones along the way. They are the type of bad habits that let others despise not like you. I get the impression that people think I’m not doing anything about it. Despite that, I want to make this point that I’m still trying really hard to correct them, even if it takes a long time.

Maybe I have been permanently-marked “weirdo” already, and there’s no way I can wash it off.

I still think all my shortcomings are due to one main problem: my lack of self-confidence, fear of failure, that I think I will fail in everything I do. And during times when I actually am quite confident in myself, others would just remind me to lose faith in myself just before I attempt to do something I have never succeeded in before.

To summarize: woonie certainly does not enjoy being left out even though he has much experience of being left out, which is why he has decided that he does not enjoy it. at all.

Went to the Toy and Comics Convention at Suntec yesterday afternoon, mainly to visit Otto Fong’s booth, where I bought a copy of his latest book. You know sometimes, when you dream about something while you’re asleep, and when you wake up, you forgot what your dream is about?

Let’s say you are attending a lecture, and you’re feeling rather bored, and your mind starts wandering off to other things like how to dribble past everybody to score a spectacular goal, or make an unassisted triple play, or managing to bid to a cold grand slam contract which is hard to find. Then all of a sudden, your mind wakes up, the lecturer is explaining holes and n-states and what-nots, and you just can’t remember what you were day-dreaming about just a few seconds earlier.

Oh yes, forgetting a day-dream. It has happened to me quite a few times already. It’s really scary; it feels as if I might forget who I am one day. I’m so going to suffer from Alzheimer’s one day. Or maybe I’ve already contracted that disease.

So I just found out what belated really means, after reading Meiyi’s MSN nick.

To think that for the past few years, I’ve been sending “happy belated birthday” sms-es just after midnight on people’s birthdays. oh my gosh.

All because back in P1 (plus minus 2 years), I first came across the word whuen I saw my mom write “Happy Belated Birthday to [...]” on the wrappers of birthday gifts. And my impression was that it had something to do with being sincere. Since then, I’d never bothered to check its meaning on the dictionary.

My class recently got this comprehension passage for GP which is about the forms of paternalism the state is adopting on its citizens. There’s this part about individuals requesting casinos to ban them from their premises in a bid to cut their gambling addiction.

I do think I need to ban myself from the video games section of the hodge lodge. Though, I pwnz in the Wii. Even though this is my first time touching that device.

Also, I need to ban myself from my dSLR. I’m spending too much time on Photoshop as a result. Photography can indeed be an addiction; I’m suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

So it happens that I got an A in Project Work. I should be happy, considering that this just might be the only A I might get for A levels.

So it happens that my entire class got an A, many many many people got an A, very few people got B, and just 1 person getting C (from Jared’s class, i heard).

So it happens that HCJC has a 98% A-rate for PW.

To summarize, Friday was happy day, but Saturday was bad day.

Friday: Trip down to PI, looked at amazing board games. Aaron, Roger and I bought a game each. Storekeeper = happy man. Back in school: Bridge, pasting stickers and APPLES AND APPLES XD though that session was quite bad coz there’s only 4 of us playing. Dined at this HK eatery which offers really good food.

Saturday. Woke up late (having originally planned to reach RI at 8.30). GP remedial at 11, so I left the house early to have some time looking around at ORA fair. But the jam. All the way from Bukit Panjang, BKE to Eng Neo, PIE all because everyone wants to take a look at some crunched-up cars on the road shoulder and slow down. So in the end, I reached school at 11.45 when I projected to arrive at 10.35.

By the time remedial ended:
1. Aaron Tan and co have finished lunch and are making their way home
2. ORA fair has somewhat ended already i.e. no more food, stalls were closing. Dunking station was still very much alive though.
3. I didn’t meet anyone I knew to talk to.

On a side note, I managed to try a bit of Guitar Hero at J8. Managed to touch the guitar 2 times before the staff came out and announced they wanted to change the game. Bah.

Ok so, I came back home at 9.30 after visiting my grandma. 3 hours later, I’m finally right here at my computer with this to say: Ironing sucks. Yes Ngiam, it really really sucks.

If I may quote (coz it applies to me word-for-word too):

I absolutely HATE ironing clothes. I DETEST it. LOATHE it. If I could I would throw the iron and board out of the window but I would be thrown in jail if I did that. Most of all I HATE myself for being so damn particular about my own ironing. I cannot tolerate a single crease when I iron, so I use damn a lot of strength or go over it a lot of times. Damn bloody ironic (pun pun) when I go to school and don’t give a shit about crumpling up my shirt or dirtying it. There’s just something about the act of ironing that makes me so damn perfectionist. I can’t stand it and I won’t stand for it. I hate ironing. I hate ironing. I hate ironing.

Problem is, I have to do this every week. (foam)

Oh hell, I’ve only been on the com, at this blog post for half an hour (while checking my Mail and Reader and GP stuff (terrorism) at the same time) and my parents are declaring that they want to confiscate my keyboard and mouse. Or turn off the switch to the living room at the circuit board. Why dammit why. Leave my computer alone. ><

So it happens that putting more effort and upping the effectiveness of mugging sessions didn’t help. at all.

I went down to see the J1s’ Orientation night last monday to take photos. One word to describe the whole event: hilarious.

Reasons:
1. OG skits: Titanic (Victor speaking mushy stuff) , Cross-dressers dancing, can’t rmb the last one.
2. Orientation video recap: basically candid photos mixed with videos of OGLs something that we can’t hear coz the wires from the AV room are screwed up.
3. Skit about Orientation by random OTeamers: OMGYanNeng the bunny, Nigel and MelHo, Wei Zhong “That was… weird”, Ali “How about T’urnmeon”, Daryl “Choosememememememe!!”, random guy with 2 bimbo-escorts. that skit ftw.
4. Batch Dance Broken-disc Remix. Though it seemed like the only thing the remixers knew was to play “you can’t stop the beat” more than twice the actual speed.
5. Auyong, the magician’s speech. The magician wears sports shoes! “We read the Youtube comments…”

Other highlights:
1.  Burning of T’Sparanza: Being right at the front watching the burning had a different feel compared to being stuck in a crowd of sweaty people having much difficulty trying to take a peek at the burning L’audeamus.
2. Storyline, which I couldn’t make sense of. But Kean Yung looked cool as pharaoh hehe.

Breaking news (old news, but breaking for me) : RJ PHOTOG FINALLY HAS A WORKING DARKROOM! Complete with enlarger, chemicals, trays, photo paper etc.

All we need now is running water, instead of having to rush to-and-from the “council toilet”, and film negatives. Yes, film. We’re talking about real photo printing and editing here, not Photoshop. The feeling u get when u see your creation just appear out of nowhere on the paper is simply priceless.

Haven’t used the darkroom since Jun 2003, at SAFRA Bukit Merah. Can’t wait to use this one once i get myself some photos on film.

I arrived at Changi Airport at about 9.30pm on the 1st day of 2008. Let me tell you, the feeling of being homesick is really really terrible once you fall victim to it. Having been overseas (in Vietnam and China) for 9 consecutive days, I missed home, frens, RJC, Singapore. It worsened on the last day, 1st of Jan, when all the New Year’s greetings sms-es started coming. During the last few days of the trip, I jumped at every opportunity to come online just so I can have a small chat, no matter how short, with my MSN contacts. I cursed when the hotel I was in had no wireless internets.

(for the record, out of the 7 hotels I’d been to during the trip, the 2 hotels in vietnam i went to had wireless connections in the vicinity. On the other hand, 3 out of the 5 china hotels I’d stayed in had no wireless, 1 required a one time fee of 10RMB but the internet died after 15mins, and 1 provided weak wireless connections that kept dropping.)

Okay so anyway, I was thrilled when I finally reached Singapore late last night. However, my lips were in a really dry and sore state due the humidity in China. The lip gloss/balm/what do you call it? that i used had no effect on my lips. And i didn’t even buy it in china. My dad commented i looked like a demented clown (all clowns are demented anyway but that’s not the point) with large exaggerated lips whenever i smiled.

Earlier in the holidays, I expected myself to dread coming back to school. Maybe it was the homesickness, but I felt the exact opposite upon stepping into the canteen. The familiar faces made me feel right at home once again. I talked to friends whom I had not met for ages. I received souvenirs from people who had gone overseas. (thanks mark for pop-eye the frosty the snowman.) I drank free milk provided by Council. I automatically fished out my wallet before I remembered this is not give-tips-to-everyone-who-serves-you China. I thanked the councillors manning the counter for their efforts nonetheless.

Lim Lai Cheng gave her inaugural speech as principal of RJC during morning assembly. I must say that she did a decent job at it, considering the fact that we had to endure pain and suffering as Bob Koh did a really bad job at his first speech as RI headmaster back in 2005 (read: long, clichéd, sleep-inducing). On the other hand, her speech, constructed around the 2008 j1 orientation theme “(T’)Sparanza” (hope), was short, succinct and straight to the point. Not a bad start to her career as RJ principal.

The class quickly found out that our homeroom for the year is at A65. 6th floor. rawr.

GP was self-introduction for some of the class as we had a new GP tutor.

2nd period spent in MEP Room, 3rd period spent in canteen.

Economics tutorial was discussing key economic indicators.

Lunchtime!

Read abit of chinese novel, did abit of math and music before going home.

I am not going back in the closet. When you ask me who I am, I will answer: I am a son, a brother, a long-time companion, an uncle, a teacher, a classmate, a colleague, a part of your community, a HDB dweller, a Singaporean. And I am also gay.

My original plan for the day was to go back to Henry Park to visit the teachers. Then Mark said he had to go back home to prepare for his trip to Phuket.

The plan changed to going to LAN with Aaron Tan and co. Then when I spotted the Sec4GEP2006 pple playing soccer, my plans changed again.

And so, I found myself playing soccer with the Friday Afternoon Soccer gang. I missed those days already.

I have this tendency to redo anything that I think is a lousy piece of work.

Cases in point: HCL ‘O’ Level Paper 1, Sec 2 history essays, EOM, math assignments, sec 3 and 4 lit essays, music essays and commentaries etc etc.

Econs and GP essays do not count. I just need more time to finish them.

I get easily traumatized by non-stop input of information relating to my status as a failure/loser. It gets worse if the info input continues despite pleas for it to stop.

To ease the suffering (but does not free myself from it), I would hide in one corner, cover my ears tight and think about absolutely nothing at all.

(This appears too many times as nightmares, and occurred twice this year in real life.)

I personally dislike such a question, as I provide myself with happy and disastrous possibilities.

The problem is, if I believe in the former, I would most likely be deluding myself, while if I believe in the latter, I tend to see no point in my existence.

Either way, it would do me no good if I try to imagine how I would be like in the future.

That’s why I prefer to just live each day as it is, accepting whatever I am forced upon due to the nature of what the day is like.

Just how would I be like ten years from now? I have absolutely no idea, and I have absolutely no idea if I want to think about it.

They tell us to be active in house activities. I dutifully sign up for IHC events.

Out of the 6 i signed up for, namely, frisbee, bowling, badminton, soccer, captain’s ball and floorball (i think),  I only managed to get a place in frisbee, which I hardly played at all anyway due to the presence of *better* players in the team.

All these, while MT desperately searches in vain for girls to participate in IHC. wow.

NDP Preview on Saturday: The rain just before it started did nothing to drown the excitement of the crowd, and the hosts did an excellent job to keep the audience in the mood.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, please rise to welcome the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr. Lee Hsien Loong… simulated.” Then the motorcade came in and this really young guy stepped out of the car and waved to everyone. Everyone literally LOL-ed. He went to where the PM would be sitting on the actual day, sat down briefly and quickly exited while waving a little more, enjoying his 1minute of fame.

The armed forces display was spectacular, particularly because never before could you see boats and Apaches demonstrating their stuff at a National Day Parade, or commandos coming right next to you in your seats.

My 19th-floor neighbour knows my ex-classmates, both primary and secondary school.

In case you blogreaders [i'm not even sure they exist anymore] can’t count, that left me with 25minutes to conduct my experiments, take down the measurements and plot the graph.

I vow not to get any lower than 45% for this tuesday’s econs test. I think this is a reasonable target, considering that I have been getting single-digit scores out of 25 or 30 for my essays, lecture tests and common test. Then again, this is the reason why no one bothers about my existence. After all, what good can a failure like me do to them? And talking about failure, why do popular people in school complain they are failures after overachieving in everything they do?

I SHALL BUCK UP ON MY ESSAY WRITING. It took me forever to find the right words to describe what I wanted to say in the previous paragraph. ECONS. GP. MUSIC <– yes this subject requires essay-writing too. >=(

Remembering theory of Econs is relatively simple. It’s the essay-writing and time management which fail me. The process of phrasing what I want to write about in a coherent and readable manner is my biggest obstacle.

This obstacle not only applies to essay-writing, but also my presentation skills. I need to be more confident in what I want to say. I need to be able to let people know what I’m trying to tell them. If I don’t do something about this, I will fail the 40% allocated to Oral Presentation for PW for sure.

Damn I better stop writing any more in case the OTeam Comm comes across this blog post and deny my application because of all these shortcomings. \=

I WANNA BE AN OGL.

This shall be my motivation to make a drastic improvement in time for Promos.

Being in the 27th percentile for CT1 is a really really bad sign though. =(

Getting your definition wrong in a Physics question is nothing compared to getting your definition of Price Elasticity of Demand wrong during your Econs Paper.

“PED is the responsiveness of price due to the change of quantity demanded.”

As a result, cigarettes, having a PED of -0.5, were price elastic.

RJC vs. VJC

It was a Friday afternoon @ CCAB. The sky was rather cloudy, with signs of a slight shower, which never happened. The one-busload of RJ-ians arrived at the venue, occupying a half of one half of the stadium steps i.e. a quarter. (._.)

During the half an hour in which we stoned like a stone, we watched the VJC players train a little, and when they left, we watched the RJC players train a little.

Finally, the officials arrived. It was time for the match to start. After the customary handshakes, both teams got to their own halves. And we saw that the VJC players were so much larger than the RJC ones. (o.o)

The game started with VJC kicking off, which they did with an unusual style. A direct (but weak) shot into the RJC half (and it wasn’t even on target lol). They probably thought they were playing rugby or something.

The first half started with much possession by the RJC players, earning 3 corners within the first 5 minutes. However, for the rest of the half, VJC had most of the possession. There were some excellent play by both sides. Solid RJ defense and skillful midfielders helped bring up the atmosphere on the field. After much tension and nail-biting moments, the first half ended with a scoreline of 0-0.

At this point, about 3 busloads of VJC pple had already streamed into the stadium. About 5 VJ people wearing white gloves (wat for? o.O) were leading the VJ cheers. A lack of RJ counsellors (and a rather timid MelHo) in the first half of the game resulted in an almost silent RJ crowd. Yours truly tried starting some cheers but got dao-ed. =( However, when more pple arrived later, Ali and LongZhao took the initiative to lead the cheers. yayy for them.

The second half started with much cheer from both sides of the stadium. By this time, the stadium steps were filled to the brim. Due to the massive amount of VJC supporters, some were forced to sit on ground level to the field. \=

I’m not sure if it’s part of RJC’s tactics or something, but somehow, whenever RJC manages to regain possession in their penalty box, they try to pass out the ball instead of clearing it. Perhaps they couldn’t find the space and opportunity to do so without getting blocked. Anyway, one attempt to pass out the ball by the defense resulted in the ball being intercepted by a random VJC player, who, after dribbling the ball abit, shot towards the far post. Timon the RJ keeper dived to his right, in vain. RJC 0 – 1 VJC Bad defense indeed by the RJC camp.

However, not long later, VJC conceded a corner. Yijing (i think?) crossed the ball in, and (someone) made a fantastic diving header straight into goal, leaving the VJC keeper no chance at all. RJC 1 – 1 VJC

By this time, both halves of the stadium were up and alive, screaming their cheers with pride and passion in support of their school team, spurring their team on with “Ra-ra-ra-raffles! (raffles!)” and “vee-jay-vee-jay-seeeeee!”

And so, the game ended with a scoreline of 1-1 after 80 minutes of regulation time.  Extra time was needed as only 1 team could advance into the finals. However, after 20minutes of extra time, no goals were scored and there was no winner yet. And so, the game had to be decided by the dreaded penalty shootout.

No point talking much about each kick as I do not know the names of most of the penalty takers. In short, the first 5 penalty takers of both sides managed to convert their kicks. Scoreline was 5-5 after 5 turns of penalty kicks, and so it was sudden death. The 6th player from both team managed to convert their penalty kick. Then VJC’s 7th player came up and shot the ball over the crossbar, before RJC’s 7th player shot it pass the left of the keeper… wide. Cheers by the RJC side, followed by louder cheers by the VJC side. lol.  Scoreline 6-6

The 7th VJC penalty-kick taker came up. So far, none of the keepers managed to save the ball (though they managed to touch the ball on certain kicks, but did not manage to push it away to safety).  But (yes, you guessed it!) Timon dived to his bottom right and parried the ball away. w00t. RJC’s 7th player came and made no mistake to slot in the winning goal.

Final scoreline: 1-1 aet (RJC wins 7-6 on penalties)

The RJ players were ecstatic, the RJ supporters were high. One downside to this blog entry is that I did not take a look at the VJC post-match reactions.

And so, RJC soccer team had defeated defending champions VJC to go into the finals of the National A Division Inter-School Soccer Championships. See you there at the National Stadium 24 May 2007 4.45pm.

Chelsea won the FA cup. I’ve no idea whether this is a good thing or not. Mourinho might not be getting the sack after all. [waitamin, some random pple on the newspapers say he's going to be sacked anyway. hmm.]
