scholarship

April 10, 2009

Civil Service scholarship rejected, and they didn’t even bother forwarding my app to ‘the relevant ministries’. Time will tell if this is in fact a blessing in disguise. But for now, I shall be utterly depressed about it.

IPPT and 24-hour Guard Duty tomorrow. Will be missing RJ Photog’s outing to the Old Changi Hospital. ):

And I want to watch Detroit Metal City!

(Must remember to continually update my hardcopy NS journal.)

Till the next time, it’s me, woonie, signing off.

physics mcq

November 18, 2008

At the rate it’s going, my blog will probably receive its 10000th visit by tomorrow. Hooray!

Physics MCQ wasn’t too bad, in my opinion. Considering that I’ve been getting an average of 25/40 for practice mcqs, I found that I had gotten at least 32 marks for this MCQ, which is excellent by my standards, even though I know that some are lamenting the fact that they got at least 3 questions wrong.

On to music. 8 days. I can hardly wait. Time to immerse myself in mridangams, imbals, the Les Six and whatnots.

Till the next time, it’s me, woonie, signing off.

econs

November 12, 2008

is screwed up. No more A. maybe no more B. So must mug really hard for case study now.

My sis went to this music store which was having this sale, so upon request, she helped me get Bach’s 2 books of the Well-Tempered Clavier and Debussy’s Clair de Lune. yay I’m happy I shall indulge in Bach after the A’s.

Till the next time, it’s me, woonie, signing off.

sigh

November 6, 2008

I really don’t know what to say anymore.

1. Hi friends,
Royce and I were discussing just the other day about having some post-int-hist fun after the history paper on Friday. haha that basically means lanning so we’re wondering if anyone else will be interested. Thus far, the interested people are Royce, Funx and I. Will be playing CS mostly, probably one match of DOTA.

We’re thinking of inviting Mr. Kung too. haha good opportunity for us to accidentally ‘kill him too many times’. Haven’t asked yet, will be confirming the number of interested parties in our class first. If there is insufficient numbers, we may ask another history class if they’re interested (:

Yup, so please state here if you wanna join in the fun! haha and I apologize in advance to the girls as this activity may be slightly male-dominated.

Alright, good luck and study hard for the rest of the papers!

Proven by GC Program

November 5, 2008

9740/01 Nov 08 Q10(ii) [© UCLES & MOE 2008]
A student puts $10 on 1 January 2009 into a bank account which pays compound interest at a rate of 2% per month on the last day of each month. She puts a further $10 into the account on the first day of each subsequent month.
a) How much compound interest has her original $10 earned at the end of 2 years?

My solution:
10(1.0224) = $16.08

b) How much in total is in the account at the end of 2 years?

My solution:
Ans = 10 * Sum of (1.02r) from r = 1 to 24.
Forget about the seq() function in calculator, and start panicking. What to do?
Prgm –> New –> (any name)
:P rompt X
:0->A
:Lbl B
:A+1.02^X->A
:X-1->X
:If X=0:Then:Goto C:Else:Goto B
:Lbl C
:D isp A

Run prgm(any name) from PRGM
X=? 24 [because 2 years = 24 months]
Calculator displays 31.03029972
Sum of (1.02r) from r = 1 to 24 = 31.03029972
31.03029972 * 10 = $310.30//

c) After how many complete months will the total in the account first exceed $2000?

My solution:
10 * Sum of (1.02r) from r = 1 to n > $2000; to find least n.
2000/10 = 200
Modify earlier code, like so:
:0->X
:0->A
:Lbl B
:X+1->X
:A+1.02^X->A
:If A>200:Then:Goto C:Else:Goto B
:Lbl C
:D isp X

Run prgm(any name) from PRGM
Calculator displays 81.
Least complete months = 81//

To quote Aaron Tan, “Hence [...] (proven by GC prgm)”.

—————————————

This is why I love the prgm function on my pink GC. But maybe next time, I should remember how to use the seq() function. My only regret is not putting down the source code for the examiners – bonus marks from teachers who are programming freaks. w00t.

People A Level in 4 days, I 4 Levels in A day

November 2, 2008

Not really, just quoting.

I realized I’m pretty much screwed for GP. Tried the HCI and DHS GP papers and did, um, badly. oh no.

3 papers in 2 days, and I’m not ready for any of them. Oh no.

I want my A for Math and Physics, the rest I don’t really care; as long as they’re not below C, I would die happy.

Back to mugging.

Till the next time, it’s me, woonie, signing off.

vocation

October 19, 2008

No point hiding the fact that I’ve got a direct enlistment to the commando vocation now. So far, I’ve only told Mark Yeow, and my family, including my brother, who was in camp when i sms-ed him the news. For everyone else, I just said that I’ve gotten my enlistment letter already, which said that I will be enlisting on the 9th of January next year.

Apparently John Cheo “found out that commandos enlist on the 9th of January”, and told this to Mervyn Tan, who promptly announced to the whole world that he had inferred that I’ve “gotten the commando letter”. So lately, I’ve been asked by many people, mostly the arts and humans people, if it is true.

So, rather than to continue being pestered about my enlistment status, I shall say this:
Yes, I’ve been directly enlisted to the Commando Training Institute at Pasir Ris Camp, and will be enlisting on 9 Jan 2009.

And, for my sanity’s sake, please, stop asking.

EDIT: Though,
junhan says (9:20 PM):
so u goin pasir ris isit?
[ 炫 ]  ㋡    says (9:24 PM):
yesh
junhan says (9:24 PM):
jiayou! ;)
[ 炫 ]  ㋡    says (9:25 PM):
haha thx
junhan says (9:25 PM):
take gd care of urself at all costs
[ 炫 ]  ㋡    says (9:27 PM):
alright.

I really appreciate the well-wishes.

The first thing my brother told me, when he returned home at 10.45pm last Friday, is to change up and go for a late-night run around the neighbourhood. Everything went well for the first 10mins, then I started dying and finally decided to stop at the 15-min mark, even though we planned to run for half an hour. oh no this is bad i’m unfit. But considering that I haven’t been exercising at all for the past 1.5 months, it’s a good start.

—————————

In terms of sports, this weekend has been a fantastic one. First is Liverpool’s 5th match this season where they come from behind to win the match. 2-1 down, Liverpool scored twice in the last 10mins to remain at level terms with Chelsea on the Premiership table.

Second is Hamilton’s victory in China. Absolutely no mistakes at all for this driver throughout the race. I’m hoping that he finally wins the title this year after a disappointing end-season performance in last year GP season.

Third, a fantastic display of skill and determination by the Boston Red Sox saw them force a Game 7 in the ALCS against the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite being 3-1 down, they made a comeback from a 7-run deficit to win Game 5 and won 4-2 in Game 6. The commentators also mentioned that Boston had gone 10 games without a single fielding error. Game 7 tomorrow at 8am will decide who faces the Phillies at the World Series.

—————————-

In terms of mugging, I got much revision done, though my stats and physics qualitative aren’t rly up to mark yet. I also haven’t touched Econs for a long while, but I’ll get to it once I get my 1/3 share of the Econs Prelims 08 from Shu Yi.

And I just realized that Math Mock Paper 2 is tmr. Ahhh stats stats stats. Gotta re-read my notes on X bar and related stuff.

—————————-

As I mentioned on my blog a year ago, I got a pair of $10 Starbucks vouchers which are valid for a year until 18 Oct 2008, for my “best progress in class for Econs” from my Econs tutor.

Somehow, I managed to postpone my usage of the vouchers (I keep convincing myself that I don’t deserve these vouchers based on the fact that my econs grades have not improved much since then). I asked people out for a mugging session at Starbucks but no one seemed interested. I even offered a few people (whom I know are coffee-lovers) the vouchers but for one reason or another, they rejected the offer.

So in the end, I gave them to my dad and my brother. After all, what better way is there to share freebies than with the family.

TIll the next time, it’s me, woonie, signing off.

post-prelims

September 23, 2008

… could have been a much better experience if not for the fact that my A-Level Music Practical Exam is next Tuesday.

My mom has been reminding me about this fact way too often for my comfort.

Not to mention that I’ve got one of the lowest scores for prelim prac, probably the lowest in all of RJ MEP history at 64%.

BUT IT’S OKAY I’M GONNA PULL THROUGH AND DO WELL FOR PRAC.

I’m just afraid that all these extra hours put into piano practice for the past 2 weeks will all go down the drain due to lack of confidence and a case of cold fingers on the actual day.

Oh f- this.

Till the next time, it’s me, woonie, signing off.

momentum

September 10, 2008

I’d never mugged so hard before in my 6 years of raffles education. Time to get this momentum going. p=mv, where m is the amount of stuff to mug [a lot], and v is the motivation to mug [to maintain at a positive level].

Monday, 11+am
Venue: Block A Windy Bench

woonie meets taufiq, siti, both are mugging econs.

wh: hey.
t: hi woonie
wh: you guys going for lunch?
t: uh. we’re… fasting.
wh: oh fuck. [awkward pause] sorry.
s: it’s okayyy.

damn malu.

As I had mentioned, the world just might end 2 hours into our math paper. Just in case it does, here’s an illustrated overview on how the Large Hadron Collider, constructed by CERN, works so at least you know why it happened.

mt house comm

August 11, 2008

I found out that in this year’s sports IHC, MT didn’t even bother putting up sign-up sheets. Apparently, the house comm just calls up people whom they think are good in the sport and ask them to sign up.

So what happens to those who are not as good? It seems that their response is akin to that of “That’s just too bad. I don’t really care that you’re in MT. You suck in volleyball and you have no right to play for us.”

A few days before Volleyball IHC, after noticing the absence of MT sign-ups sheets, I asked Jeffrey, who’s in Volleyball, about sign-ups for this IHC, and he said that his volleyball friend is forming a team, and that this team must be specially picked by him so as to ‘allow for maximum team bonding’. Um, wtf?

Just last year, when I wanted to join the sports IHCs, I was told to leave space for the J2s. This year, I’m told to leave space for better players.

Last year, there was a shortage of MT people participating in IHC. This year, their solution to this problem is to handpick their team in advance.

However, I think there’s one particular person whom I think is the most disgusting, the most biased person I’ve ever met, aside from my choir conductor. He thinks that he’s the greatest, that he’s good at every single sport, that since he has a lot of friends [as seen by his long list of birthday presents], and is so high up in the social ranks, therefore he has all the right to say “You suck at volleyball. You do not deserve to play.”. He is willing to sacrifice the use of a female school team volleyball player, in order to ensure that I do not play. Yet, as I spectate all his volleyball games, I dare say that I can play just as well, if not better, as him.

If not for the rest of the J2s in MT, I would have completely lost faith in the house I’ve been faithful towards for the past 6 years. I don’t care if they are faking it, but I shall believe that they are sincere, and I’m appreciative of the fact that I’ve been given the opportunity to play during Captain’s Ball IHC, even if it’s just for a few minutes of one match.

Till the next time, it’s me, woonie, signing off.
